Instagram will soon test ultra-tall photos to match its full-screen Reels

9:16 photos are coming “in a week or two.”

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed during an Ask Me Anything session that the platform will begin testing ultra-tall 9:16 photos in a week or two.

Currently, Instagram supports vertical images up to 4:5, but the new aspect ratio will allow for full-screen content while scrolling.

The previous TikTok-like redesign received criticism for forcing all photos into a 9:16 frame, affecting the way they were displayed.

Mosseri acknowledged the flaws in the full-screen experience and aims to offer the ultra-tall photo option without making it mandatory for all posts.

Instagram's redesign was disliked by some users, leading to less frequent app usage.

The platform is now reevaluating its approach and plans to reduce the number of recommendations shown to users until it can better select content they will enjoy.
