The Russian historical fantasy of Anastasia may just sweep its audiences away with music and magic.
The opening night of "Anastasia" at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago drew a diverse audience, all eager to experience the popular musical. The show combines historical intrigue with the whimsy of the 1997 animated film, following the story of the rumored surviving Romanov, the Grand Duchess Anastasia. The narrative revolves around characters Dmitry and Vlad, who attempt to transform the amnesiac Anya into Anastasia to claim a reward. The production impresses with its skillful use of projections, designed by Aaron Rhyne, which create vibrant scenes of Russia and Paris, enhanced by Donald Holder's lighting and Linda Cho's costumes.
Veronica Stern shines as Anya/Anastasia, capturing both the innocence and fiery spirit of her character. Ben Edquist delivers a powerful performance as Gleb, a Bolshevik leader torn by duty and history. Bryan Seastrom and Madeline Raube provide comedic relief and strong vocals as Vlad and Countess Lily. The ensemble adds depth and atmosphere, notably Amin Fuson in "Stay, I Pray You." The orchestra, led by Jeremy Robin Lyons, seamlessly carries the musical's enchanting score. "Anastasia" continues its run in Chicago through September 25th, 2022.
